CAS Seminar - African Astronomy, Astronomy in Africa
Idealized identities, how astronomy knowledge is acquired and shared, and practices of inclusion and exclusion are three themes that repeatedly appear in my research. Indigenous astronomy projects have included studying communities that continue to use the sky for night navigation and filming storytellers that tell stories about the sky. Studies of astronomy in Africa have included studying how African astrophysicists are educated, filming stakeholders’ speaking about the Square Kilometre Array in Africa and designing the South African Astronomy Oral History Project. I will spend some time on how the results of these projects have fed into other ongoing debates.
