Description

In the wake of contemporary campus controversies over free speech this talk looks back to earlier such moments within anthropology in the U.S.. Focussing on Columbia University and Barnard College it traces the histories of several such controversies where students revolted, faculty and students were suspended and expelled and university governance placed into question:- all for very different reasons. It raises questions about the role of such controversies  in the development of U.S. anthropology and what looking at earlier moments might tell us about today.
