Description

Protest and survive: the wider outcomes of social movements

Classic accounts of social movements focus in on the political impacts and discuss their success or failure. Whilst many movements do seek policy changes, this is an overly limited and limiting view of socio-political protest. Drawing on research with Dalit movements in south India and the policing of various protests in the UK, this talk will foreground the wider outcomes of mobilisation. From micro level biographical changes to macro level shifts in cultural values and attitudes we will see that protest movement are central to democratic societies and essential to challenge enduring inequalities and beliefs.
