Social policy academic to serve as Welsh Government policy fellow

Content

Dr Elke Heins, a senior lecturer in social policy, has been awarded one of 21 prestigious Policy Fellowships that give academics the opportunity to work in government departments on pressing policy challenges.

Funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Welsh Government, Dr Heins’ 18-month fellowship will focus on the impact of COVID-19 on skills, higher education and lifelong learning in Wales, and how government can best support society’s ongoing recovery from the pandemic.

The fellowship builds on Dr Heins’ expertise and research on UK labour market policy from a comparative perspective and her experience in collaborating with governments and third sector organisations.

“I feel very privileged to be part of this first cohort of ESRC Policy Fellows and am excited about working within Welsh Government on this highly important policy area. The Fellowship offers excellent opportunities to bring in my own expertise while gaining unique insights into the civil service and the use of research evidence in policy-making.” - Dr Elke Heins.

The fellowships reflect the goal of building stronger networks between academia and government in ways that bring the best evidence and analytical perspectives to bear on policy-making and policy implementation. More information about the fellowships can be found here.
