Social Policy PhD student Yusuf Kadarisman has won the School of Social and Political Science’s (SPS) Sue Grant Service Award 2025/26 for outstanding contribution to the community.

SPS presents the award each year to a PhD student for exceptional community-supporting work, within the University and beyond.

Yusuf received the honour for, judges said, his “wonderful work with the Edinburgh University Indonesian Society and how he and others have provided a welcoming and supportive 'second home' for Indonesians studying far from home, while also building bridges with the wider University of Edinburgh and the local community.”

In his words, Yusuf’s PhD research “examines the everyday lives of creative workers in Indonesia, especially those working in the craft and fashion subsectors. I explore how they draw on skills, knowledge, resources, and many more in building their work, and how they engage – or choose not to engage – with government programmes. The project also considers how uneven access and intersecting inequalities shape creative work and encounters with policy.”

A huge well done to Yusuf from the School for his achievement and his support for our community.
