Dr Hadijah Mwenyango, an alumna of the Social Work doctoral programme at the University of Edinburgh, will lead the new East African Social Work Regional Resource Centre (RRC) based at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda.

The centre is a new and exciting network of Schools of Social Work and educators across African countries, with an initial focus on East Africa. Its aim is to lead standardisation of social work education, research and practice, to improve lives and advance social development.

This institutional milestone and prestigious status of a RRC was awarded by the International Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW).

Strengthening social work education in the region

Dr Mwenyango, who studied at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Social and Political Science (SPS), said: “We are very grateful to the leadership of the International Association of Schools of Social Work for granting us RRC status. In line with the Social Work Global Agenda's first theme, Ubuntu, this is an opportunity for Schools of Social Work and educators to strengthen social work education excellence and the profession in the region.”

Dr George Palattiyil, incoming Head of Social Work at SPS, said: “I am delighted to know that Makerere University is hosting the newly launched East African Social Work Regional Resource Centre. I have a longstanding association with colleagues in the Department of Social Work and Social Administration that is producing social work graduates capable of responding to local and global challenges, besides being engaged in fascinating research and scholarship activities.

“It is even more heartening that Dr Mwenyango, our alumna, is leading the centre and I very much look forward to working with her. I hope the RRC becomes a centre of excellence not only for the region but also globally through its association with the International Association of Schools of Social Work.”
