Background

Catherine Montgomery is a Senior Lecturer and Chancellor's Fellow in Science, Technology and Innovation Studies at the University of Edinburgh.  Her research focuses on the juncture between scientific knowledge production and clinical care, which she has explored ethnographically across multiple settings.  Her work to date has focused on the ways in which the design and implementation of clinical research produces particular configurations of knowledge, sociality and change. She leads a team of researchers exploring the mutual re-configuration of data practices, care and learning in data driven healthcare.

Catherine is a guest lecturer in ethnography at the University of Oxford, chairs the editorial collective of the Journal of Critical Public Health and is a member of the Wellcome Trust’s interview panel for Career Development Awards.

Current Research

Catherine is Principal Investigator of a European Research Council Consolidator Grant, funded by UKRI, entitled ‘Data and Healthcare Revolution?’ (DARE).

As well as leading this project, Catherine is conducting an ethnography of data practices, care and learning in critical care.

Catherine is Co-Investigator of a Wellcome Trust Discovery Award, entitled 'Medicine Without Doctors: Reimaging Care and Voice through Play'.

She leads the methodological workstream, developing playful methods for rethinking interdisciplinarity.

Previous Research

Catherine previously held fellowships at the University of Oxford (Institute for Science, Innovation & Society/Nuffield Department of Primary Care), the University of Amsterdam (Department of Sociology & Anthropology), the University of York (Science & Technology Studies Unit) and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. She has conducted research into how methods travel in global health research, the rise of adaptive design clinical trials, the mobilisation of patient experience data in the NHS, and staff experiences of critical care during COVID-19.
