Research interests

My widely published research in the sociology of sport data science appeared in two books and over 20 scientific papers, including some of the most respected peer-reviewed international journals in the social sciences such as Discourse Studies and Historical Studies in the Natural Sciences. I am an author and public speaker on issues related to the use of data analytics in sport. Published by the largest Italian academy press in March 2024, my book "Calcio e Intelligenza Artificiale" is based on over 40 interviews with domain experts and 70 hours of participant observation to analytics training events. Over ten reviews and interviews with the author appeared in the media in the six months after its publication and the English translation of the book on LinkedIn had over 16,000 views.

I am interested in supervising postgraduate students wanting to undertake ethnographic studies of data science applications in sport.

Background

My work on AI adoption in sport impacted the way data analysis training is imparted by football associations and sport data vendor companies internationally and prompted important collaboration across fields, including the surgery sabermetric group of the Department of Clinical Surgery at the University of Edinburgh. More than 10 of the students I mentored and supervised in the last five years found employment in the sport industry. My last three PhD students (all women) have all been hired by Arsenal FC and went on to found a consulting company called 'Remondata' to focus on women's football analytics. As well as MSc and PhD dissertations on the use of data in fantasy football, women's professional basket and the NFL to cite a few, I routinely supervise student work that appears at prestigious sport industry events such as the Opta Pro Analytics Forum and the StatsBomb Conference.

I have been pioneering online teaching in the School of Social and Political Science and contributed to develop the Data Science, Technology and Innovation Msc, an online programme offering cross-College education to over 250 on course students.
