Using Literature Effectively and Writing in Your Own Voice
Description
This workshop consists of two parts: It starts by addressing common issues of poor scholarship, its main occurrences, and the misunderstandings that underlie them.
Building on this, a second part explores how to not just avoid issues, but how to master the use of literature. It introduces techniques for how to effectively paraphrase and summarise, and how to find the right balance between referring to literature and using your own voice.
This workshop includes some light-touch writing exercises, so make sure you bring your laptop or any other device / paper you can write on.
Martin Booker has over 10 years' experience as a tutor and teaching fellow at SPS, coaching students in their essay writing on both UG and PG levels. He is also curator of the website The Critical Turkey - Essay Writing Hacks for the Social Sciences; accessed here - https://blogs.ed.ac.uk/criticalturkey/
Please note this is the first of 2 options for the same workshop, and so attendance at both dates is not necessary
