Research interests

Background

Annika joined PIR from the University of Lund, where she was Associate Professor in IR,  and with which she retains an affiliation. Prior to working at Lund Annika was Senior Researcher at the Danish Institute for International Relations. She has also held permanent lectureships at the Universities of Leicester and Edinburgh. She obtained her BSc (Government) at London School of Economics  and her MSc and D.Phil. (European studies/International Relations) at the University of Sussex.

Annika is an international relations and gender scholar whose work stretches across a range of fields including  feminist foreign policy, feminist security studies, gender cosmopolitanism and care ethics, feminist peace and digital diplomacy,  critical military studies, the study of crisis, populism and gendered nationalism,  human rights and environmental justice as well as intersectionality. She also works on celebrity humanitarianism, pop culture and world politics, with focus on the ethical, gendered, neoliberal and colonial underpinnings of celebrity politics and activism.  Her article  “NATO’s Strategic Narratives: Angelina Jolie and the alliance’s celebrity and visual turn” (co-authored with Katharine Wright, Newcastle University), was selected the lead editor’s favourite article, published in the journal Review of International Studies in 2021 and 2022.

Research projects to date

She has recently been part of a large research project on the politics of world heritage (funded by the Swedish Research Council) and is particularly interested in the intersection of world heritage, the politics of extraction, global ethics, gender and indigenous justice, with emphasis on Sapmi. Related research interests are  Arctic and Nordic security and governance. In addition she is part of a large research project on  Digital Diplomacy (Funded by the Marcus och Amalia Wallenbergs Minnesfond),  with emphasis on feminist digital diplomacy, nation branding and the use of digital diplomacy by international organisations.

She has been a  member of three  funded Lund Pufendorf Research Themes on a) crisis b) conflict and gender and c) the future of human rights,  the latter of which she  co-coordinated. The research projects generated two articles, one on interdisciplinary and intersectional approaches to the study of  crisis and the other one on the populist logics of human rights in times of climate crisis, employing an intersectional lens. She has also completed a research project financed by the Crafoord Foundation, Sweden, on cosmopolitan militaries, producing two articles, one centring on the dialogical peacekeeping of Danish and Swedish women soldiers serving in Afghanistan and  the other one on the ethical embodied experiences of  Swedish and Danish veterans, serving beyond borders, both co-authored with Professor Annica Kronsell. 

Methodologically, she employs discursive, narrative and normative analytical approaches, informed by feminist techniques and research ethics.

PhD Supervision

Annika is interested in supervising PhD students in any of the research fields described in the sections above. She has supervised five  PhD theses to completion on a range of topics including the constitution of the Arctic through maps; foreign policy analysis as well as the broad field of security studies. She is currently co-supervising three PhD students (two at Lund and one at Freie Universität Berlin), whose interests centre on feminist foreign policy as well as environmental and indigenous politics and activism, extraction and justice as well as forests and more than human relations. 

She has taught discourse analysis and research ethics  on several PhD methods courses  and her  PhD and other teaching is informed by a dedication to active and dialogical learning and pedagogy. 

External leadership 

Annika has  served as Chair of the Feminist Theory and Gender Studies (FTGS) section of the International Studies Association (ISA) and is currently Co-Convenor of the Gendering International Relations Working Group (GIRWG) of the British International Studies Association (with Professor Laura Sjöberg). For 10 years Annika co-convened the Lund Gender and Politics research group (with Dr Catia Gregoratti). Annika has also served as an elected member of the regional board of the association Autism Sweden, being a passionate advocate of neurodiversity.
